A timber frame structure is made up of walls, floors, roofs and bents. Bents are full height frame constructions that run perpendicular to the walls and provide the primary structural posts of the frame. The bents are typically spaced in bays from 12 to 16 ft. (3.65 to 4.87 m) in width. Precut and dressed timbers are laid out on the floor for assembly. The bents are constructed with mortise and tenon connections between column, beam, and bracing elements to produce a rigid, braced frame. The bents are raised in series and braced to one another with horizontal purlins. To provide structural stability, diagonal bracing is used to prevent racking, or movement of the structural frame. Braces are sized to at least half the length of the beam to beam span of the post. A wide range of materials can be used to serve as exterior sheathing between timber members.
